Marvesta Raises Shrimp Above Ground

Starting in 2002, three young proprietors combined their expertise in business and technology, and applied it to sustainable aquaculture. The friends found a plot of land on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for their operation and set off to carve a niche in the market of the most consumed seafood in the U.S…..shrimp. SOP spoke with Scott Fritze, one of the partners, to learn more about the philosophy and process behind Marvesta’s ultra-sustainable product.

The partners’ company, Marvesta, started its journey with a vision to build a sustainable and repeatable system for raising shrimp in a new way. At the time, sustainability had yet to come into fashion, particularly on the east coast of the U.S. The partners sought to create a system for raising shrimp that suffered none of the problems with most shrimp farming.

Marvesta continues moving toward its goal of a zero exchange system. With innovative new technology and the desire to go greener, the partners are creating a system with no waste. Shrimp excretion is essentially uneaten food. It can be treated and recycled back into the system as a usable feed. Because the operation is organic and closely monitored, water can be recirculated and recycled too.

The true test of Marvesta’s process is the end product. Top chefs in the Washington DC and Baltimore area are singing very high praises. They love its freshness and delicate sweet flavor. Now that word is spreading, the never frozen product is being distributed all over the country.

Scott emphasized how important education is to achieving their vision. Marvesta is always looking to work with partners like aquariums and culinary schools. They help people realize that aquaculture can be sustainable and must be, if our country wants to continue its same eating habits. For Marvesta’s efforts, their shrimp have gotten the thumbs up from Monterey Bay Aquarium as a ‘best choice’.

It appears Marvesta has built a win-win model that will only become more important and necessary in the future. SOP wishes Scott and his partners continued success.

Unfortunately not, but you can order them online.

    Here is Scott’s response:
“In terms of retail purchasing, there are no outlets in Baltimore. The only way to get the shrimp on the retail level is to order online. The quantity available is often diminished very rapidly, so it’s best to check back
    frequently.”
