Sustainable Fish in Cat Food!

SOP promises you this is not a joke! Mars Petcare, whose brands include Snickers, Juicy Fruit, and Uncle Ben’s Rice, will soon offer cat food products made from sustainably sourced fish. SOP found this a bit shocking (even comical) at first. But, we believe this underscores how pervasive the sustainable seafood movement has become.

Mars Petcare has committed to use only sustainably sourced fish in all its pet food by 2020. The Virginia-based company recently announced it will soon be launching the new Whiskas and Sheba fish variety cat foods. The fish used to make these products will come from fisheries certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
We Americans will have to wait a little longer for these products to show up on our shelves. The initial launch is set for Europe, where people tend to be more socially and environmentally progressive than here in the States. But, soon is the day when green-minded cats everywhere will eat fish with a clear conscience!
While this new development may seem a little silly on the surface, it is indicative of the growing awareness that sourcing sustainable fish is essential to long term business success. Big businesses will not survive if they have to constantly search for new sources of fish. SOP will keep you informed of more corporate commitments as they come on line.

I know there are some other pet foods that are sustainable on the shelves now, Rugby (my parents dog) eats sustainable wild caught salmon every day…not as big of a supplier as Mars but still steps in the right direction.
