About SOP
Sustainable Ocean Project (SOP) attempts to be a vehicle for change. In a new world, where we recognize our natural resources are not limitless, some companies are now accounting for their effect on the environment. However, much work still remains, particularly in the seafood business.
On a positive note, the sustainable seafood movement is gaining momentum. SOP believes we are quickly approaching a ‘tipping point.’ Soon, enough companies will have adopted sustainable seafood policies that it is the norm rather than the exception. Slowly but surely, companies are recognizing that a long term, reliable supply of seafood (wild or farm-raised) simply makes good business sense.
SOP highlights sustainable seafood successes and shortcomings in an effort to educate and mobilize the general public. We ask you to join in the movement in any capacity you’re comfortable with. For example:
- Be aware of stories in the news that relate to this topic
- Spark up conversations with family and friends about sustainability issues
- Ask questions of your fishmonger or at your favorite restaurant
- Subsidize the forward-thinking fisherman, purveyors, and retailers with your hard earned dollars
SOP is written and edited by Braddock Spear. He is an expert in ocean fisheries management, having degrees in marine biology and marine policy. And for over two years he’s done independent research on the sustainability of fisheries from around the world. He relies on friends, colleagues, chance encounters, and any other source of information and inspiration to maintain this blog. Hence, SOP is written in a first person plural voice….we are all part of this movement.
